Early Encounters in Aotearoa

The first explorer to arrive in Aotearoa was Abel Tasman in 1642. He called the land Nova Zealandia. The next explorer was James Cook in 1769. The chief navigator helping the explorers was Tu Paia. The Europeans brought pigs, ship rats, potatoes and diseases. A musket is a gun. The musket wars ended in 1830. In 1840 there were 40 Maori to every one Pakeha.
